Journeying the Interconnections Between Carrington and Sámi at Biennale Arte 2022

10 June 2022

The programme of the Biennale Arte 2022 Meetings on Art takes Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (1917-2011) – whose literary and artistic work inspired the title and themes of the 59th International Art Exhibition – as a point of departure to expand on the thematic threads raised throughout The Milk of Dreams: the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses; the relationship between individuals and technologies; and the connection between bodies and the Earth.

Journeying the Interconnections Between Carrington and Sámi

On the 8th of June, 2022, the discussion Journeying the Interconnections Between Carrington and Sámi took place at Teatro Piccolo Arsenale as part of the Biennale Arte 2022 Meetings on Art programme.

The discussion explored Leonora Carrington's connection with Sápmi and the noaidit who, according to Carrington herself, " ... just happen to be the most magical people on earth!".

Through the work of feminist art historian Gloria Orenstein, author of Leonoras Reise Susanne Christensen and Sámi scholar Ánde Somby, the discussion broadens understanding of Carrington's connections to Sápmi and how those connections influenced her work.
